THE COMPETITIONS

1. DEBATE

A competition where two opposing teams bring arguments of their own to motion. The format in this competition is Asian Parliamentary System. Each them consist of 3 speakers who will carry out a 7 minutes speech each, continued with a 3 minute reply speech. The purposes of this competition are to stimulate critical thinking, developing skill in delivering good and structured argument, to widen knowledge in various field, to integrate the spirit of a healthy competition in every participant.

2. NEWS CASTING

This is an individual competition where the participants are required to read the news chosen by the committee, just for professional anchors do. It also consist the weather forecast. The purpose of this competition is to enhance the importance of speaking English in a well manner, also to find potential as well as talented future news presenters.

3. STORY TELLING

An individual competition where the participants will tell a story given by the committee with their own method and style. Participants are encouraged to use performance tools like pictures, costumes, puppets, or other things that support their story. The aim of this competition is to boost up the confidence, imagination, expression, and the ability to tell a story fluently and as interesting as possible.

4. SPEECH

An individual competition where the participants are required to give a speech based on the essay they wrote before. After giving speech for maximum 7 minutes, they will be asked questions based on their essay or speech. The aspects judged are the content of speech, grammar, usage, pronunciation, mimic, and their way of presenting the speech. The aim of this competition is to raise self-confidence and to develop the ability to write their ideas and convey it orally.

5. SCRABBLE

It is a word game in which two to four players score points by forming words from individual lettered tiles on a game board marked with a 15-by-15 grid. The words are formed across and down in crossword fashion and must appear in a standard dictionary.The game contains 100 tiles, 98 of which are marked with a letter and a point value ranging from 1 to 10.

EROS – English Relationship of Sumatera is the event for the participants to gather, socialize, and have some fun. They will be entertainment, games, door prize, etc. The EROS will be held at:

CLOSING CEREMONY

We will hold a closing ceremony at the final day of SEC – EROS 2011. The contents of the ceremony are the announcement about the winner, the giving of prizes, entertainments, etc. the closing ceremony will be held at:

STORY TELLING COMPETITION

Participants’ Guidelines

How to participate:

The participants must submit the following to the Committee:

a. The hard copy of the story (3 copies) which they will tell at the qualifying round in technical meeting.

ü Participants must select two different stories to tell at the competition – one for the qualifying round and another for the Finals, if they are short listed.

ü Topic used for final round differs from the one that are used in preliminary. All participants must prepare to precede final round.

b. All participants require submitting a hardcopy of their stories (3 copies) for final round in competition’s break time if they are short listed, including their sources, for both their stories to the Committee.

Rules during the Competition:

Each participant must come at least 30 minutes before the competition begins.
Each participant must stay at the competition venue until the competition ends and must remain silent when another participant is delivering his/her story, unless by any of the committee’s permission.
None of the participants is allowed to read any story text or keynote when delivering the story.
Participants may not invent a story although they may improvise and tell the story in their own style.
Each participant will be called three times in a row based on his/her turn (first chance).
Participants who don’t come up after being called three times (first chance) will be put on the last turn (second chance).
Participants who don’t come on the second chance will be disqualified.
Participants may opt to use actions, props or costumes, at their own expense, to help to bring their stories to life.
A green flag will be raised up by the timekeeper as a sign for the participant to start delivering the story.
In preliminary round, each participant has maximum time of 8 minutes to deliver his/her story.
In preliminary round, each participant has maximum time of 10 minutes to deliver his/her story.
A yellow flag will be raised on the 2 minutes left.
On the last minute, time keeper will raise the red flag up as a warning for the participant that the time is up.
15 seconds will be given as a tolerance time right after the time is up.
The tolerance time will be a consideration for score lessening. Thus every second past the tolerance time will reduce the score.

ü Pronunciation

b. Performance (60%)

ü Interaction (stage act, inc. eye contact, costume, equipments)

ü Intonation

ü Expression (including body language)

ü Punctuality of time

Every rule has to be followed. Disqualification is necessary for every participant who doesn’t abide the rule.
